Writing about someone you admire should be a walk in the park, yet I've been sitting here for a few minutes thinking about what to say in reference to David Bowie. There's just so much to fit in that I couldn't possibly type it all out. Well, lets start at the easiest and most obvious place, he is my idol.
Being a performer (actor, singer dancer) is hard as it is, but imagine being Bowie. Not only did he make amazing music but he defined Glam Rock fashion in the 1970's and paved the way for artists in the future (Cherie Currie and Lady Gaga etc) to express themselves through performance art. I don't consider Bowie to be a singer or a musician, he is a true artist. Everything from the printed leotards to the face paint, the man is a true visionary. I feel as if the progression in Bowie's style is what really intrigued me about him before I was really familiar with his music. Starting off looking like a hippie with his long hair and bellbottoms, then only a few years after creating his most famous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. Two characters that seemed to be on the completely opposite sides of the spectrum were inhabited by one man. After Ziggy he moved into equally eccentric Aladdin Sane and so and and so forth. He finally ended up looking "normal" after he settled down and retired the platform shoes. He was inspired by Warhol and that inspiration helped make Ziggy look like he did. The eye popping costumes, makeup, and his signature orange mullet only make me love him more because I know I would never have the courage to do something like that! Like I said before, Bowie opened the door for artists to express themselves through the clothing that they wear and the way they dress on stage, not just through their music. He gave society and the expectations it had for a "musician" the middle finger in a way and for that I admire him immensely.
